New bakery café serves comfort food in a cozy space! To get a feel for what Rocklin chef and tea master Bobbie Devany is all about, you have to understand the value of an old family recipe. Like the one she has for her Orange Buttermilk Cake that’s written on a faded index card in her great grandmother’s handwriting. Or Devany’s version of the Kentucky Hot Brown with a cheese sauce that’s proven to generations of Devany’s relatives that breakfast can be the most enjoyable meal of the day.

Real and authentic comfort food that makes your stomach yearn for mom’s kitchen is now available at Bobbie’s Kitchen Bakery and Café across the street from Safeway on Granite Drive in Rocklin. With windows dressed in rustic French curtains and buttercream colored walls filled with Provencal décor celebrating joie de vivre (the joy of living), Bobbie’s Kitchen sits in the middle of Sierra Meadows shopping center, offering a quaint indoor and outdoor dining experience.

Her menu reveals reasonably priced breakfasts, savory sandwiches, soups, salads and a bakery that
wafts the aroma of freshly baked rolls, tea cakes and piping hot coffee. “What really sets us apart is our food and atmosphere,” said owner and chef Devany as she topped a chocolate cake with fluffy ganache frosting. “The food is authentic, real food. Just what I’d serve you if you came to my house.” Bobbie’s Kitchen offers an extensive selection of baked goods including cakes, scones and muffins. “The bakery items are exceptional,” said Rocklin customer Michelle Pfister. “You do not want to miss eating one of her bear claws!” Customers have described Bobbie’s Kitchen as having a “down home” feel and Devany is always ready to recommend one of her dishes or loose leaf teas.

“Freear’s Hope is a lovely Sencha Japanese green tea with lemon grass, ginger and orange peel,” Devany said. “We have a strong French breakfast tea and also a robust Assam tea. We also have a very nice Ti Kwan Yin Oolong tea that has a delicate, soothing flavor.”

Teas can be served hot or iced and pair well with the café’s hearty lunch menu. Julie Ourada of Rocklin was so impressed with the fresh fare at Bobbie’s Kitchen, she e-mailed all her friends about the new bakery cafe. “We have been here a couple of times and give five stars to Bobbie’s Quiche Lorraine, curried chicken salad and Freear’s Hope Tea,” Ourada said. “Her Orange Buttermilk Cake is so good it makes my mouth water just thinking about it.”

Devany said she knows how to please a hungry crowd because she grew up in a large family that surrounded her with lots of love and comfort foods. “My biggest inspiration has to be my mom,” Devany said. “She always made great meals and desserts and she can recreate almost any recipe after trying it elsewhere.” Bobbie’s Kitchen is also available for special events, catering and tea parties.

A family affair, the bakery café is staffed by Devany, her daughters Melissa and Hannah, son Michael, and close family friends. Devany said she is grateful to the Rocklin Chamber for helping her bring a dream 17 years in the making to reality.“One of the things I really like about Bobbie is that she’s genuine,” said Franklin Burris, chamber chair. “Everything you eat here is made here.” And Devany is determined to serve the freshest, most comforting dishes a customer desires. “This is a comfortable place to be,” Devany said. “Once you’re here you won’t want to leave.”
